June 5th: Sacred Valley

The last day in Cusco we used for a short excursion to the sacred valley. We went to the little town of Pisac, which has a beautiful market and just a nice, relaxing atmosphere.

Am unserem letzten Tag in Cusco machen wir einen kleinen Abstecher ins heilige Tal. Wir fahren zu der kleinen Stadt Pisac, welche berühmt ist für ihren Markt und eine entspannenden Atmosphere bietet.

Die jungen Mädels nutzen auch schon die positiven Aspekte des Tourismus und lassen sich für ein paar Cents photografieren.

 Bought myself lunch from a local lady for 4 Soles (appr. $1.30). She carries the pots with all the food in a blanket on her back, and supplies the shop owners of the market with food.
Von der netten Oma hab ich mich für 4 Soles Mittagessen gekauft. Sie trägt die Töpfe mit dem Essen in ein grosses Tuch gewickelt auf dem Rücken, und versorgt die Marktverkäuferinnen mit Essen.

I watched the Champions League final in a small family-owned restaurant. The kids were watching on the own screen, I think a different program though. The place is owned by an American girl married to a Peruvian. If you order something they don`t have stored, he runs out to the store around the corner and buys it. 

Ich finde ein kleines Restaurant das von einer Amerikanerin und ihrem peruanischen Mann geführt wird. Zum Champions-League finale scheinen ihre Freunde gekommen zu sein, ich bin sozusagen der einzige "Fremde". Sehr interessantes Ambiente und super-freundliche Gastgeber. 

June 4th: Machu Picchu

On the day before came the big surprise: We wanted to drive to Machu Picchu Pueblo (at the base of the mountain) and take one of the little buses up the mountain. As I am researching how to get there, I notice that there IS NO road connection - you have to take the train or hike. Hiking is out of the question with my parents, and I had heard that train tickets need to be booked in advance. I pack up my laptop and try to find the office where they sell train tickets. I get three different sets of directions but can`t find it, all while rushing through the Corpus Christi Party-crowd. I finally enter a travel agency, and they are great in helping me out. But they can`t book our tickets since I don´t have all the passports with me (which you need to book the tickets). But now I know where to go, and an hour later I book them via internet from my room and the girl at the reception prints them out for me. And the day is saved! :-)

Der Tag vor dem großen Ausflug bringt eine Überraschung: Ich sitze im Kaffee und will mir die Route anschauen die wir zum Machu Picchu Pueblo (am Fuß des Berges) fahren müssen, als ich feststelle es gibt gar keine Strassenverbindung dorthin. Es geht nur zu Fuß oder mit dem Zug - welchen man im voraus buchen sollte. Zu Fuß dauert mindestens 2 Tage, und ist mit meinen Eltern keine Option. Mit einem Stein im Bauch packe ich meinen Laptop ein und frage die Bedienung wo der Fahrkartenverkauf ist. Nachdem ich zwei weitere male gefragt habe und das Büro immer noch nicht finde, gehe ich zu einem der Touristenbüros die Ausflüge verkaufen. Da ich unseren Reisepässe nicht dabei habe (die braucht man hier um eine Fahrkarte zu kaufen) kann man mir hier die Tickets zwar nicht verkaufen, aber ich werde auf die richtige Fährte gebracht und sehe das noch Fahrkarten für morgen erhältlich sind. Eine Stunde später übergibt mir das nette Mädchen an der Rezeption die Ausdrucke, welche ich gerade zuvor im Zimmer über´s Internet gebucht habe.

Die Zugfahrt ist fast so interessant wie Machu Picchu selbst - teuer aber wert jeden Cent.

With micro-busses they take us up the mountain. Seeing some rockslides along the switchbacks increases confidence in the road. :-)
Mit Kleinbussen geht es den Berg hinauf. Ein paar Steinrutsche entlang der Serpentinen geben uns vertrauen in die Strasse. :-)

Hardly noticeable, on the saddle point there are two short rock walls - this is the "sun gate". When the sun comes up in the morning it shines through those walls and illuminates a particular point on the site.
Leider nur schwer zu erkennen sind die zwei kleinen Mauern auf dem Sattelpunkt zwischen den beiden Bergspitzen. Dies ist das "Sonnentor". Geht die Sonne morgens auf, scheint sie durch die beiden Mauern und beleuchtet einen bestimmten Punkt der Ruine. 

This site just has a different atmosphere than most other ancient ruins. As I stand on the edge of steep downward drops, I wonder how the people lived here back in the day. The terraces which they used as vegetable gardens and fields stretch way up beyond the site on the surrounding mountains. A dream for people who enjoy amazing mountain views, a nightmare for people who are afraid of heights.

Obwohl Machu Picchu sehr touristisch geworden ist, habe ich diesen Ausflug genossen. Die Städte hat auch mich eine andere Ausstrahlung als andere Ruinenstätten. Es hat etwas faszinierendes, an den Steilhängen zu stehen und sich vorzustellen wie die Menschen damals an diesem Ort gelebt haben.
